Yukon Orienteering Team consists of 4 groups divided according to age and ability. All groups have regular practices and competitions in the summer months. The athletes in the Red Group train year round. For more information on the groups and to registration information click on the link to visit the Yukon Orienteering Association website.
National Summer Training Centre is a pilot project of the Canadian Orienteering Federation’s High Performance Program. 6 athletes from across Canada will be living and training in Whitehorse with the YOT this summer. The 6 athletes will be joining the 7 Yukon athletes that are also part of the COF HPP.
This site is intended primarily as a resource for the Red Group/NSTC athletes who are based here in Whitehorse. However, I think it will also be of interest to others. The weekly training plan will be posted. If necessary, maps for meeting locations will be added. There will also be some analysis of training and races.
There are three main coaches of the Red Group/NSTC along with a large support system and many helpers. Ross Burnett is a former National Team athlete who has represented Canada at the World Championships. He is a NCCP Level 3 coach, a mapper and level 3 official. In other words, he is a legend of Canadian orienteering. Afan Jones is one of the early members of the Yukon Orienteering Association. He is one of the mappers of the Canadian Championships middle distance area and the Co-Meet Director for the Canadian Championships this summer. We are lucky to benefit from his experience and knowledge as he will be a very busy man this summer. Brent Langbakk has run for Canada at 5 World Championships, most recently in 2008. Brent, a NCCP level 3 coach, is the Director of Training for the YOA. His other roles include being the Athletes’ Representative on the COF Board and Chair of the COF’s High Performance Committee.
